Why We Give to Blackout Cancer

Saluki Athletics, SIH, and the SIH Foundation extend our heartfelt thanks to the jersey winners for their incredible generosity and unwavering support of Salukis Blackout Cancer. The personal stories behind your involvement are truly the driving force and inspiration behind this meaningful initiative.

  • My brother was taken to the emergency room in late March of 2024. He had been blacking out and his friends took him there. The ER ordered tests and found large glioblastoma. The surgeon got what he could. My brother beat the odds and lived a little more than a year. He earned 3 degrees at SIU and after getting his Doctorate he had a long career in academia. I bought the jersey to honor him. – Todd
  • My mother died of cervical cancer in 1972. We were share cropping farmers who could not afford health insurance. Basically they let her die because we could not pay for treatment (at least that is what I was told). I have recently gone through prostate cancer myself and am presently cancer free. I am a big supporter of the American Cancer Society and also a big supporter of Coach Kill who started this fund raiser. – Ed
  • My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma in 2018. After undergoing a few rounds of traditional treatment, the chemotherapy failed due to the very aggressive nature of his cancer. He was given the chance to participate in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy. He agreed and was chosen as part of the CAR T-cell group. He underwent a grueling treatment and recovery process, but finally went into remission in 2019 and, thank God, remains there today. – Anonymous
  • I do this for all my family and friends who have battled or are battling cancer right now. Thank You SIU for fighting the good fight!! – Kirk
